Kabelo Kim Modise is a member of the Photologo community who lives in Windhoek, Namibia. Born in Botswana, Kabelo Kim has been active in the art world since 1999 and is best known for his remarkable linocut prints.
When Kabelo Kim reached out to us and asked us to design a Signature Logo, we were very excited. We wanted to create something that was representative of his practice and philosophy, without overshadowing his pieces. After digging into his work, we immediately became inspired by his signature use of lines to tell a story.
“Everything we create in life starts with a line, every drawing, painting, print or design. Lines represent repetition and rhythm, actions that help with focus, consistency, and building confidence.” (Modise, 2022 via The Project Room)
Drawing from the power of a simple line, Kabelo Kim creates incredibly intricate artworks which highlight the beauty of repetition, simplicity, and also community. On their own, the lines are just that – a line. But together, they come together to create something far more compelling than the sum of their parts.
For Kabelo Kim’s Photologo we drew from this philosophy to create a thin, angular Signature that showcases his preference for the line in his work. The words Kabelo and Kim, are made up of just two lines each, highlighting the power that a simple line can have, and how far it can go when used creatively. The logo represents Kabelo Kim’s practice without distracting from the beauty of his artwork. It blends in with the other white lines in his pieces, stark against the black, as if he had drawn it there himself.
